You all know how talented Sean and the rest of the Gilvey family is. You've seen their work all over our store. Well, now it's my families turn to show off. My brother, David Kimelman, is a huge talent. We are having a show of his photographs entitled "Natural Order".
David explores the complex, tenuous, and often contradictory relationships people have with our natural world through his photography. The collection of 21 prints in the show "Natural Order" are a mix of human and animal portraits, landscapes and action shots that together express our fear of elemental chaos, our alienation from nature and our attempt to put ourselves above the natural order.
The loneliness is almost palpable in "Sim City", which shows an aerial view of empty streets, a roof top with a tennis court and pool, everywhere perfectly trimmed shrubbery, but not one sign of life. A landscape of towers and fences shows the work of mankind without any humanity. A photograph of a dead chicken soaking in a bucket of blood and flower petals is both strikingly beautiful and repellant.
While the show tackles serious themes it also has a sense of humor. In a photograph titled long walks on the beach, an older couple (he in a leopard-print g-string and she in a plaid bikini) hold hands while walking down a busy beach. Two monkeys caught in the act are as ridiculous as any humans coupling.
It is these dichotomies of loneliness and togetherness, emptiness and fullness, humor and sadness, that make David Kimelman’s work so compelling.
"Natural Order" will be on display from June 5th through August 26th. The opening reception is from 6-9 on June 5th. We'll be serving wine and hor d'oeuvres (made by my mother and god-mother).For more information call Emily Kimelman Gilvey at 267-319-1887. More images can be viewed at davidkimelman.com
